MORE ABOUT KABOOM! by Michael Small, the world premiere of a new comedy in the New York International Fringe Festival, directed by BT McNicholl and co-produced by Joan Cullman Productions KABOOM! is the second collaboration between Michael Small and BT McNicholl, who previously co-wrote the book to The IT Girl, a jazz-age musical based on the 1927 silent movie IT (which launched the career of Clara Bow) KABOOM! pokes fun at the many types of con men who spend their lives trying to squeeze money from the rest of us. With spam filling every email box, CEO crimes in the headlines, and reports that speculators are driving up gas prices, the Digital Age feels like a golden age for scams. KABOOM! pokes fun at the way we all invite con men to mess up our lives. Though KABOOM! was partially inspired by Ben Jonson's Volpone and The Alchemist, it is rooted in current-day experiences. Many of the play's jokes about California culture started with playwright Michael Small's encounters as a maladjusted New Yorker on assignment for PEOPLE magazine in L.A. and San Francisco. KABOOM!'s leading man Ray Wills, who plays con man Rodney Rangler, previously appeared in the original Broadway casts of The Producers, Wonderful Town, Big, and Anna Karenina. He is joined onstage by Fred Rose (Company and Cabaret on Broadway) , John Di Domenico (Donald Trump in Meet The Spartans), Jim Barry, Kristen Cerelli, Laura Daniel, and Tyler Hollinger. Daily Candy (8/9/08) on the world premiere of KABOOM! by Michael Small: "So funny you might onomatopee your pants." |
